OIL SKIN

G'day! Welcome to our Outback World. What we've got for you is a range of oilskin garments that have been built rather than designed - built from experience by the blokes who have lived and worked in them for the past hundred years.

The rugged heritage of oilskin began back in the 1800's when sailors aboard clipper ships sped to and from England in an effort to get the prized Australian lamb's wool fleece to market before their competitors. These high sea adventures were long and treacheruos, and many times brought disease and death to the sorry lads. In a desperate attempt to stay dry, the sailors used old sail cloth soaked in linseed oil and made cloaks to protect them from the extremes of a three month sea voyage.
When ocean going steamships replaced the clipper ship era, many of the sailors found jobs as stockmen or ranch hands in the Outback. The tough, oiled sail cloth they had grown to depend on at sea was now faced with a new challenge... the Australian Outback. An oil/wax mixture was developed to replace linseed oil, making the cloth more flexible, durable and resistant to hardening and cracking. From seamen to horsemen, the coat's features were adapted to a new lifestyle on a horse. Today this original Drover coat design is still preferred by horse men and women the world over.
They build the oilskins in the Australian tradition with only the finest and most durable materials available. The 100% cotton is specially woven for a lifetime of ruggered wear. the fabric is then processed with a proprietary oil/wax mixture which makes the cotton wind and waterproof, yet it remains breathable.
